System Requirements
PlayRen streams games from cloud servers directly to your browser using WebRTC. Because all the heavy lifting happens server-side, the requirements on your end are minimal.
Supported Browsers
PlayRen works best on modern Chromium-based browsers. Here's the compatibility breakdown:
| Browser | Version | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Google Chrome | 90+ | Fully supported |
| Microsoft Edge | 90+ | Fully supported |
| Mozilla Firefox | 95+ | Supported |
| Safari (macOS) | 15+ | Supported (minor quirks) |
| Safari (iOS) | 15.4+ | Supported |
| Opera | 80+ | Supported |
We recommend Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge for the best experience. These browsers have the most mature WebRTC implementations and hardware-accelerated video decoding.
Network Requirements
Since games are streamed as video, a stable internet connection is essential.
| Quality | Minimum Bandwidth | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Playable | 5 Mbps | — |
| Good | 10 Mbps | Most users |
| Best | 20+ Mbps | High resolution |
Additional Network Considerations
- Latency: Under 100ms round-trip to the game server is ideal. Under 50ms feels near-instant. Visual novels are turn-based, so latency is less critical than in action games.
- Stability: A consistent connection matters more than raw speed. Frequent packet loss or jitter will cause visual artifacts.
- Data usage: Expect roughly 1-3 GB per hour of play, depending on stream resolution and scene complexity.
- Firewall: WebRTC uses UDP on dynamic ports. Most home networks work out of the box. Corporate firewalls may need to allow UDP traffic or TURN relay.
Device Requirements
Since rendering happens on our servers, your device just needs to decode a video stream.
Desktop / Laptop
- Any computer from the last 8 years should work fine.
- Hardware video decoding (Intel Quick Sync, AMD VCN, NVIDIA NVDEC) helps reduce CPU usage but is not required.
- A screen resolution of 1280x720 or higher is recommended.
Tablets
- iPad (2018 or newer) and Android tablets with 3GB+ RAM work well.
- Use landscape orientation for the best experience.
Phones
- Playable on modern smartphones, but the small screen may make text-heavy visual novels harder to read.
- Use fullscreen mode for the best experience on mobile.
Chromebooks
- Fully supported. ChromeOS handles WebRTC natively with hardware decoding.
Audio
- Speakers or headphones are recommended — visual novels rely heavily on music and voice acting.
- The stream player has a mute/unmute toggle if you need to play silently.
No Installation Required
There is nothing to download or install. No plugins, no extensions, no client software. Just open your browser, log in, and play.
